Cleaning mildew from leather

Mildew can appear on any surface, no matter the fabric. You may thing that leather can avoid the appearance of mildew, but you’re wrong. The best thing you can do is remove the mildew as soon as it appears.


Mildew may seem harmless, but it isn’t. If inhaled it can cause breathing problems and can also affect your eyes. You should always wear a mask dampened in water to avoid the mildew from getting into your lungs. Also protect your eyes.

Preparing the solution

The area needs to be cleaned before with a dry cloth. After this, make a solution of equal parts of rubbing alcohol and water. Never use drinking alcohol.


Use a sponge or a piece of cloth and dip it in the solution. The gently rub the affected area. Don’t press too hard.

Mildew removal

After you have rubbed the leather with the solution, take it outside and let it fully dry. Don’t let the leather in the sun or near any heat source. Place it in the shade but outside your house. You can repeat the step if mildew is still present. Now you can use leather conditioner.

Preventing mildew from reappearing

Preventing the mildew from growing back isn’t hard. Just store your cloths in dry places. Also ventilation is very important. Once in a while, open the cabinets and let them get some air.
