Removing mildew from boats

Because of the high humidity, boats are great place for mildew and mold to grow. Once in a while, every boat owner should clean the boat from mildew.

Direct sunlight

Sunlight is the biggest enemy for mildew.

Over the winter, mildew can appear on your boat because of the sheltered storage. Use sunlight as a helping hand. Take the boat outside your garage and let it in the sun for a few days. Allow the light to cover as much of the boat as possible. The exposure will kill the mildew and prevent it from spreading.


Now it’s time to begin scrubbing the mildew. For this job you can use borax. This is a white powder made for cleaning, that can be found in any supermarket. Make a mixture of borax and water. The paste created needs to be thick. Apply it on the selected areas. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then use a brush to remove it.

Salt and vinegar

If the borax doesn’t solve the problem, you can use some salt and vinegar. This will surely be the end of any mildew traces. You can use this mixture in case you want a quick solve of the problem.


Also plain white wine vinegar can solve the problem. Put the liquid in a spray bottle and then apply it in the mildew. Let is soak for a few moments and then remove the mildew with a brush.


A bleach solution can be used for more cleaning. Make a mixture of water and bleach in equal parts. Put the mixture in a spray bottle. Spray the solution on the mildew and let is soak for about 15 minutes. Rinse the spot with clean eater.

New upholstery

The last option that you have is to replace the upholstery. This should be your last solution as it’s the most expensive and time consuming one. If the mildew cannot be removed, than this is your best choice.
