The process of installing a blanket flat roof is very simple and it can be done by anyone. You should consider installing a blanket or batt insulation is you have an exposed ceiling below a flat roof. The heat transfer will be decreased and it will help you save money on energy. Tools and Materials
Measurements Use a tape measure and measure the space between the ceiling joists. Then calculate the square footage and this should help you make an idea of the material needed. Cutting the insulation The insulation material usually comes in rolls and you will need to cut strips to fit the spaces in the ceiling. Use a straight edge and use an utility knife to cut the material. Installation Place the insulation between the joists. Place the strips and then fill the little spaces that will surely remain. The strips need to be a little larger then the spaces, to assure a better fix. Now you need to staple the strips in place. Staple the fiberglass every 6 inches or so to assure a tight fix. Complete the process by stapling the entire ceiling. Plastic sheeting If you plan on installing some drywall sheets on the ceiling to cover the insulation, then you should make sure that the insulation covers all the space between the roof and the sheets. You can also install heavy duty plastic sheeting. Install the first piece in one corner and then continue to the rest of the ceiling. Staple only in the joists area, where you will actually get a grip. |
