If you decide to replace the bathroom floor tiles, then you should arm yourself with patience and perseverance. It is a time consuming job, but it’s not that difficult. You should try to do it by yourself as you will save a lot of money.
Instructions
- The first thing you need to do is remove the old tiles. Use a chisel to do the job.
- Now, after removing the tiles, make sure that the floor is clean and smooth. Also, use a grease removal solution otherwise the cement won’t stick to the floor.
- For cutting the tiles to a specific dimension, use a tape measure and a wet saw (for larger tiles) or a tile cutter (for smaller tiles). Be sure to measure the tiles at least two times before cutting them.
- Lay the cut tiles on the floor just to check how they look. Don’t put any adhesive.
- Use a notched trowel to apply the adhesive to the tiles. This needs to be applied evenly. Add some adhesive on a small area of the floor too. Let it dry a little before applying the tiles.
- Push firmly on each tile when placing them. Start from the middle of the room. Be sure to include spacers and take into consideration the drain.
- Let the adhesive dry and set over night.
- Now, remove the spacers. Buy some grout and mix it according to the instructions of the manufacturer.
- Use a rubber float to apply the grout in the spaces between the tiles. The excess grout can be removed with a wet sponge.
- Check the floor for grout haze after an hour and the clean them.
- Seal the edges between the toilet, bathtub and sink with mildew resistant silicone or caulk.
- After a few days you may mop it clean.
- When you go shopping for tiles, let the sales staff know that you need water resistant adhesive, tiles and grout.
- You can sometimes install the new tiles over the old ones, but if you want them to have a long life, then it’s best to remove the old tiles.
- Always buy extra tiles just in case you brake some.
- Always wear safety goggles when you attempt to remove old tiles. Also wear them when cutting tiles.
