How many homes, old or new, have you walked through and discovered a squeak in the floors? It doesn’t matter the age of the house, but the way the wood floor was installed. This should not be tolerated and you should know that this can be very easily cured.
There are many things that can cause squeaks. One of the most common ones is that the wood sub-flooring is not tightly secured to the floor joists. So when a person walks through the wood is pressed down and then pulls back up. The squeak is caused bu the movement of the wood on the nails in the floor. Another cause can be that the wood is too dry.
Many carpenters use now diagonal bridging between floor joists. There is a trick here though. The pieces of bridging must know touch each other. There should be a space of half an inch between them, and between the joists. This must be done so that you can allow them to move freely when you put loads on the floor.
Before you install the floor is better to ask the producer or the sales agent the best way to prevent squeaking for that type of floor. You should avoid floors that involve glue and ring shanked nails, although, if used properly, sub-floor adhesives and ring shanked nails can prevent many squeaks.
You should test the floor immediately as it is installed. Walk on it and see if it squeaks. If it is, then you should talk to the builder and let him know about the issue. The best way to solve problems with squeaking floors is to prevent them.
