First, you will need a few tools that will help you through the process. You will need to assemble a tape measure, a 4-foot level, 4-inch flexible putty knife, paint roller and roller pan, 2-inch paint brush, step ladder, snap-blade razor knife, smoothing brush and a large table or flat working surface so you can handle the wallpaper.

First of all you will need to prepare the wall. This means that you have to make sure there aren’t any holes or bumps in the wall. If there are any you will need to fill or flatten them. Then you have to paint it with a special wallpaper primer, just to make sure the adhesive will stick to it and will not penetrate the wall. An advantage of the primer is that is allows the adhesive to stay liquid for a longer time so thus you can move the wallpaper or make modifications.

You will need to be very careful when you put the wallpaper on the wall. Every piece must be exactly aligned with the other, especially if there is a pattern on it.

Many modern wallpaper are already pre-pasted. This means that you only have to put some liquid activator to make the paste adhesive to the wall. An important thing you need to have in mind is that regular wallpapers tend too expand after they are pasted. So, to avoid the wallpaper to expand on the wall you need to let it for about 5 minutes on the work table, so that it can “relax”.

When you apply the wallpaper, first work on the edges. Don’t work on the upper part because the pattern won’t align well. No house is perfectly aligned and the wall may be slightly different from one corned to another. Use the paint brush to flatten any bumps that appear on the wallpaper. Brush carefully from the center to the edges to get rid of any air bubbles. Use the snap-blade razor knife to get rid of the excess wallpaper on the top and bottom.

Be very careful when you cut around switches or outlets.
