Besides their ornamental purpose, landscape light bulbs can also provide more light for your plants and garden. For plants which do not need much light, you can install an incandescent light bulb about one inch above them. If you want to prevent your plant from stretching, you should use incandescent light bulbs. On the other hand, the blue light from fluorescent bulbs helps keep your plants bushy and short.
If you are looking after flowering plants, you should provide them with supplemental light by using halogen lamps or high-intensity discharge lamps. These options also have the advantage of inexpensive replacement bulbs, but their effect on plants is comparable with the one of the sun. High-pressure sodium lamps could also be a good solution, since their red-spectrum light is required by plants for blooming.
High-intensity discharge lamps and high-pressure lamps require extra-caution when handling, because they can blow up if you drop them. It is good to know that all landscape light-bulb systems can function for 14 to 16 hours per day but they are surely to increase the costs on your electricity bill.
