Flashing are those parts of the roof that protect roof connections against leaks and expensive water damage. Actually flashings are installed in the lower parts of the roof, where the angle changes drastically. These are the most vulnerable parts of the roof.

But flashings don’t need to be on the roof, they can be installed all around your home.

About roof flashings

Roof flashings can be installed under the actual roof shingles. You can also install them over the shingles in valleys and along peaks. They are usually made from metal or any other waterproof material. It can installed in places like:

Roof valleys
Roof peaks
Along edges of roof and wall
Around vents
Along chimneys

About window flashings

These prevent leaks from occurring around the sash. Rain can easily find its way around joints or crevices, but with the help of waterproof flashings, you will protect these areas around windows.You can find three types of window flashings:

sheet metal – made from basic thin sheets of metal. This material can be easily bent and molded.
vinyl – flashings that come with vinyl siding.
tape – this is the self-adhering flexible membrane.

About deck flashings

Add a protective flashing between the house and the ledger board if you are planning on building a deck or a porch. There are a few materials and forms available for deck flashing:

stainless steel – thin metal sheets
vinyl
copper – you will need to use some copper nails. It’s a very durable materials and it will resist those chemicals used for treating the wood shingles.
