Installing a copper roof over a tile roof

Measurements

First of all you will need to make some measurements of the roof, to properly calculate the number of copper panels and slat boards. This will prevent you from getting too many shingles and also save time and money in the process.

Rafters

Use an electronic stud finder to locate the rafters beneath the tiles. Mark them with the chalk line over the existing tile.

Removing the old tiles

You will need to remove the old tiles in order to drill some pilot holes in the center of the rafters. The tiles need to be removed along the chalk line. Do this for all the rafters. Then replace the tiles one by one and use some 3/8 carbide drill bit to make some holes through the center of the tiles.

Slat boards

Now you will need to attach the slat boards to the tiles by drilling through the slat boards and securing them to the rafters using the holes in the tile. Use 3 inch screws to attach them.

Copper panels

Now you are ready to begin installing your copper panels. First of all you will need to install the edging of the perimeter of the roof. Nail the edging using 1 1/4 roofing nails and get the panels set to go in place.

Laying the panels

After you have set the panels in position, secure them with slate boards and with 1/4 inch screws. Ensure that this process is done correctly.

The panels will need to overlap each other in order to prevent any water infiltration.

Trim

Now out the 5/15 lap screws every 4 feet of your panels. The screws need to be attached where the panels overlap each other. Add the trim after the screws are completed throughout.
