Synthetic slate roofs are an alternative for slate roofs. They are much cheaper and so affordable for more people. Because installing slate roofing can be quite difficult, it can be a very expensive project. Fortunately, synthetic slate roofs are cheaper and easier to install. Here are the materials that you will need for the job:
Preparation It is important that the roof structure can support the wight of the shingles. So inspect and replace areas of the roof to be sure that you won’t have any structural problems in the way. Starter shingles You will need to install starter shingles first. Remove 6 inches from the top of the standard 12×18 inch slates. Snap a chalk line before you install them so that you can overhang them by one inch. Joints The first line of shingles will need to be placed with the joists overlapped halfway. Roof valleys Be careful when forming roof valleys, as you want to avoid possible leaks. Seal the edges to the roof with strips of the roofing material or membrane you are using. Nail the valley flashings over a layer. Slates The slates will need to be cut to fit perfectly against the rib. In case you have curves, you can bend them by heating and mold them with a heat gun. Caps You should install the caps over a ridge vent, in case you are using nails. Place the shingles in place and then nail them. Shingle placement In case you want to place a second course of shingles, then you should put them on top of the first layer. Place the cutout edge over the center of the tab in the middle of the other shingle. |
