Clay tiles are one of the oldest methods used for roof finishes. They are very light and durable and are also fire proof.
Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:
- saw
- battens
- cant strips
- tiles
- waterproof membrane
- flashing
Underlayment
This is one important step. In order for the roof to stay waterproof, you will need to install this protection. Install a waterproof membrane. It can be expensive but it will protect you from expensive repairs.
Then apply the builder’s felt or tar paper. This will help the tiles stick to the roof and also it will add extra water and fire protection.
Installing the roof flashing
Install the flashing in places where the excess rain may cause problems. Places like valleys, chimneys and skylights are prone to water problems. Use nails or cant strips to fix it in place. The flashings should be made from stainless steel. This will add more durability.
Attaching the clay tile roof
Follow the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Lay them from one corner, in a line. Choose the way according to the keyway connecting style. Make sure that you clear the area where the joists interlock vertically to ensure proper fitting. Never use foam adhesives because they offer weak attachment.
You can paint the flashings with a similar roof color. It’s important that you keep of tools and materials dry to ensure proper installation. Do not try to install the clay roof tiles by yourself if you do not have any previous experience.
