Carpeting a staircase landing

Carpeting your stairs is an easy job and with the right tools and instructions anyone can do it. By adding a carpet to your staircase landing, not only that you will improve its appearance, but also make it less likely to cause slip-ups.

Some of the materials that you will need are:

  • Work Gloves
  • Knee Kicker
  • Safety Goggles
  • Tackless Strip
  • Carpet Knife
  • Carpet
  • Carpet Pad
  • Masonry Nails
  • Heavy-duty Stapler
  • Measuring Tape

Here’s how you can do it:

  1. First of all you will need to choose a durable carpet.
There are some specially designed for staircases. Because the stairs are prone to damage and wear they need to be resistant.
  2. Also the carpet needs to be stain and soil resistant. That’s why twists or loop pile carpets are the best.
  3. Measure the landing. Have someone with experience bind the sides so it looks finished.
  4. Next you will need to install the tackless strip. Measure the length of each landing wall and cut it to this size. Use masonry nails to fix it down. Leave 1/8 of an inch between it and the wall.
  5. Now cut the carpet padding a little smaller than the landing. It will still need to reach the tackless strip. Use a staple gun to fix the carpet on the landing.
  6. Then hook the carpet into the tackless strip. Push the teeth of the knee kicker into the carpet, one inch from the wall.
  7. Finish the installation by tucking the edges of the carpet into the baseboard.

  • if you haven’t done this before, then it’s better to call a professional.
  • the tackless strips need to join together at the four corners of the landing.
