How to replace a baluster with a wrought iron railing

If you want to replace your old wood balusters with wrought iron railings, then you will need to know a few things. This is not an expensive renovation and it can really enhance the look of your home. Just make sure you follow the next tips.

Some of the materials that you will need are:

  • Wrought Iron stair spindles and shoes
  • Epoxy
  • Saw capable of cutting metal and wood
  • Pliers
  • Wood putty
  • Sandpaper
  • Stain or paint
  • Painter’s tape

First of all you will need to find the right wrought iron spindles for your stairs. You will need to know the number of needed spindles. Determine which of the designs, colors and sizes are the best for your railing. There are different styles to choose from. You can spend anything from $5 to $25 per spindle.

Next you will need to remove the existing balusters. Cut each baluster three-quarters of the way towards the center. This will prevent the spindle from falling out. After you have cut this section, grab the cut point and pull it towards you to remove it.

Now use pliers to get rid of the old nails and of the broken stair balusters. Apply some wood putty in the nail holes and let it dry over night. Sand the areas that have been damaged.

Now you will need to do some measurements. Measure each space for each spindle and add 1 inch. Now cut each spindle at the needed length.

Use some painter’s tape to protect each of the iron spindles from the epoxy. Next place the top of the spindle in the hole first then put the shoe on the bottom. Before fixing the railing with epoxy, dry fit them. Start working from the bottom up.

Use epoxy to glue the top and bottom of the spindles.

By following the above tips you should be able to install the spindles in an afternoon.
