Installing staircase risers

Support and safety are the most important things when building a staircase. There is an obvious order of installation that needs to be respected. The risers are the components that will need to be installed over the stringers.

Here’s how you can do it;

  1. All risers need to have the same width and height. You can cut your own risers or buy pre-cut ones. Sand the edges of all risers to remove any variance in the measurements.
  2. Next you will need to put some wood glue along the vertical edge at the bottom of each stringer. This will provide extra support and remove the squeaks. Use a level to position the risers on each stringer and ensure that they are leveled. Press the risers to the glue and then recheck the edges.
  3. Use small nails to secure the risers. You need to nail the top and the bottom of the risers at least.
  4. Repeat the steps for each riser. One trick to ensure work support, is to alternate installing risers with tread to create a platform to work from.
