Converting a flat roof into a gable roofRoofing
A flat room is a simple roof that is built right on top of the home. A gable roof is one that has a high pitch. With some basic skills, your flat roof can be converted to a gable roof.
- Joist Hangers
- Wood screws
- Polyethylene Sheeting
- Rigid foam insulation
- EPDM Roof Membrane
- Roof drain or GutterMaterials
Go to your local improvement center to purchase the materials that you will need for the construction. Because the roofing wood will be exposed to the elements, it will need to be treated. Ask a local contractor if you are not sure about the type of wood that you need to buy.
Building the walls and frame
Frame the roof using the wood that you have just bought. Mount the joist hangers to the framing of the roof in order to provide a hanger i which the 2×4 boards can be run through for the plywood sheets that will cover the top of the roof.
Also you will need to create the gable roof framing and wall on the ground. Use crane truck or any types of hoists to place them. Call a professional and tell him to come over to inspect the new frame.
Securing the frame
Have the roof frame hoisted into place and put on top of the flat roof. Use large bolts to attach the ends of the gable roof to the flat roof.
The foam insulation will need to be attached to the boards of the gable roofing frame. If you want the roof to be kept dry and resistant to the elements, then you need to use insulation.
Seal all the roofing openings with the roof membrane and fix it using the bonding tape. At each roof intersection install the flashings. These are needed to direct water into the rain gutters.
Now all you have to do is install the shingles over the roofing material. Place the shingles over the plywood and roof membrane.
