Framing a mansard roof

Mansard roof are a great addition to any home, be it old or modern. The advantage of having a mansard roof is that it offers more living space.

Materials that you will need:

  • wood
  • pen
  • paper
  • screwdriver
  • screws

Frame design

The first step is designing the frame.

There are two stages of the construction, with the larger frame going on before the smaller, higher one. You will need a tall support center, so draw a semi-circle on the paper. Then draw a line from the top of the circle to the line of the bottom. Fold the paper so that the lower line of the semi-circle reaches above the top of the support line. This way you will separate the smaller roof from the larger.

Begin the framing by building a horizontal line. This should be as wide as the lower part of the roof will be. Place a heavy wood in the center. Screw the pieces. This is the basic support structure.

Lower roof

Now take a piece of wood and cut it to the desired length of the lower roof. You will need four pieces. Lay boards between each of them, to the top. Then create another horizontal support with other four pieces. Nail them together and screw them in place.

Upper roof

Take four more pieces of wood and place them in the corners. They can be brought across and touch each other in the center. You should have a basic pointed roof. Add your framing timbers along the sides.
