Roof types

There are so many roof types that you may get confused. You may ask which is better, but the real question which is better for your house? You should take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of each of the roof types and see which one will fulfill the most needs.

Wood shingle roofs

If you like the natural look of wood, then you may consider wood shingle roofs.

They will age along your house and as they get older, the shingles will change color, but keep their aesthetic appeal. Wood shingles are very durable but also expensive. Because wood is prone to water damage, mold and mildew growth, fire, you should invest in wood shingles that have been treated with protective glazes.

Slate roofs

For French and Colonial house designs, slate roofs are the best choice. They are very durable and will last for decades. The problem is that slate roofs can be very heavy and you should think if the structure of your house will resist the load. Also they are very difficult to install so you will need to call a professional.

Tile roofs

Tile roofs are great if your house is designed in a Spanish or Mediterranean style. You can buy clay tiles and concrete tiles. Clay tiles are more traditional and have a more pleasant look. Like slate roofs, tile roofs can also be very heavy so it’s better to make sure the structure of your house can withstand the weight. Tile roofs are also quite expensive, but can last up to 50 years.

Metal roofs

Although they are quite expensive, they are more and more popular. They offer great protection against the elements, and are very, very durable. They also require low maintenance. They come in many designs and styles, and also colors, so you will not have a problem in choosing one.

Asphalt roofs

Asphalt roofs are the cheapest of them all. There are also more expensive asphalt shingles, known as architectural shingles. They have a short lifespan and aren’t as stylish as other types of roofs. They are also very environmentally unfriendly.
