Change door lock
When you move into a new home that has been owned by someone else before, it would be a good idea to change the locks. The same situation has to happen when you lose your keys, given the fact that changing a lock is not such a hard job to do. Some of the tools and materials that you will need when changing a lock are screwdrivers and replacement lock sets.
Handling the door
Because you have to work on both sides of the door when you change the lock, it’s best to block the door with something, so that you can do your job well.
Removing the screws
Each lock has two screws that keep the parts together. If you remove them, you’ll be able
to take off the two halves and put them aside.
You can find two screws that help to keep the lock tongue in position. In order to pull off
the tongue, you need to remove the screws first.
Replacing the tongue plate
When you buy a new door lock, you will find 3 pieces of great importance along with the
two halves and the tongue plate. First you have to secure the new tongue plate with the two screws, only after you have put it with the flat portion inside the door.
Putting the two halves back together
After you have positioned the key hole with the face toward the outside of the door, you
can put the two halves together. To be sure you have put all the pieces in the right position, you can verify the key hole to be facing outside and the knob facing inside.
Secure the two halves
When you buy a door lock, you will receive two screws that need to be used for the two
halves of the door lock. You have to tighten them until the lock stays still and doesn’t move at all.
Removing the old plate
This plate is designed especially to keep the wood tight for the door jamb, making the
lock more secure. You have to remove the screws that have been used to hold the strike plate next to the door jamb and then put the old parts somewhere aside.
Installing the new plate
In the package of the door lock you will also find a strike plate. Take all these parts and
after that attach them to the door jamb. All this is necessary to find the right match for colors of all the parts.
Donating the old parts
Instead of throwing away the old parts of the door lock, a better idea would be to see if some associations accept this kind of donations. If you’re lucky, this act of yours can even bring you a tax deduction.
