Grow a nice lawn
A beautiful lawn is a delight for everybody. For some people, taking good care of their lawn is as important as their personal hygiene while for others is just a part of their household chores. A nice lawn depends on the quality of the grass seeds.
You don`t have to be a specialist to be able to grow a nice lawn. If you have grass seeds, an adequate fertilizer and a lawnmower you can get a beautiful green living carpet to cover dirty soil around your house.
We all love the beautiful green blankets that embellish the landscape and give points to a flower garden.
The advantage of using grass seeds is that they are cheaper and more resilient than sod or plugs. Depending on the growing conditions, grass seeds usually germinate between five to ten days after they have been sown.
Varieties of grass
From about 10,000 types of grass plants, only 50 can be grown as lawns. To make it easier to choose, one has to know that there are only two principal varieties of grass seeds: cool-weather and warm-weather.
The first category of grass seeds is suitable for a four season climate because it survives to all weather changes. Examples of cool-weather grasses: perennial ryegrass, red fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, turf-type tall fescue, etc.
The second category includes: buffalo grass, Bahia, Centipede grass, Bermuda grass,St. Augustine grass, etc. This kind of grass plants does not grow well from seeds and it changes color during winter.
The perfect time to plant grass seeds is in the early spring or autumn.
Choosing grass seeds
A little bit of knowledge about the different features of grass seeds types will go a long way in helping you choose the right ones for your lawn. The advantage of growing cool-weather grasses is that they develop very quickly and have a very intense color. The warm-weather grass is very hard to get rid of if it invades your lawn and change color during winter or die because of the low temperatures.
Even when you sow only grass seeds in your garden you`ll observe that there are many other plants growing on your lawn. These plants are very resistant to periodical mowing and walking on. For example: carpet weed, clover, dandelion, curly dock and sorrel have a nice aspect sometimes and can handle drought very well. Thus, if you want to get rid of them, use a broad leaf herbicide and then plant new grass seeds instead.
A well-drained and fertilized soil is perfect to grow an intense colored and thin lawn in seven days. After two weeks, when the lawn is tall enough, mowing is recommended. This will force your lawn grow thicker. Mow your lawn every seven days after three weeks from planting. If there weren’t any bad conditions, you should have a beautiful lawn, ready for picnics and kids games, within a month.
