Insulation

Attic

Although blown fiberglass can be a little difficult to install, it is less expensive then other types of insulation and it is also very efficient. You need to be very careful with the installation, though. If it isn’t made properly, the effectiveness won’t be the same.

Always take safety precautions when working with fiberglass. Wear goggles, mask and gloves. Also make sure that the area is well ventilated.

Tools and Materials

  • Cellulose insulation
  • Cellulose blower
  • Tape measure
  • Metal flashing
  • Rulers
  • Cardboard
  • Long sleeves
  • Long pants
  • Safety Eyeglass
  • Mask
  • Hat or Cap
  • Gloves

Measurements

Measure the area that needs to be insulated. Determine the square footage of your attic. This will help you buy the right amount of insulation.

Covering the attic access and blocking light fixtures

Cover the access hatch with a cardboard. Fix it with adhesive and tape.

The light fixtures need to be blocked using a metal flashing. Leave a space between the flashing and the light fixtures of at least 3 inches. The metal flashing keep s the fiberglass away from the wiring.

Installation

First of all make sure that you are wearing protective equipment, like long sleeves, long pants, goggles, dust mask, gloves. Install a few rulers in different places to make sure that the fiberglass layer is high enough.

Now, for the installation, you will need to feed the blower with insulation. Hold the hose parallel to the floor and then start the machine. Start spreading the insulation from a distant corner and then make your way to the access hatch. Check the depth of the insulation.

Be careful not to cover the vents. If you did so, use a putty knife to remove the insulation. Do not let the content of the hopper fall below the minimum requirements.
