Wood is the most common used material for stairs construction. They are very durable and also offer a nice look to any home.
Materials You Will Need:
- Wood stairs
- Construction glue
- Protective Eye-wear
Removing the lip
Usually stairs are designed with a lip on the front that helps hold the carpet in place.
Covering the stringer
Stringers are the side walls of the steps. They are usually covered but will need to be refaced with nicer ones. There may be the case that the these stringers lack and you should use some plywood to cover the steps.
To get the most out of the plywood sheets, use a template to cut the pieces.
Creating the risers
These are those pieces that are fixed to the back of each step. You can also use plywood. Start the measurements from the top and continue down. Number and fit each piece.
Trimming the stairs
In the installation process you will find that not all stairs are the same size. Measure and fit each one of them.
Finishing the wood
You should take all the pieces off site and finish them. If you are using polyurethane products let them dry 24 to 48 hours, because otherwise it will not be strong enough.
Use some glue to install the stringer covering to the wall. You can also use some nails in the lower parts that are not visible.
Now start at the tops of the stairs. Glue the plywood pieces to the main floor nosing. Also use some nails. Use construction glue to fix the riser to the treads.
