Attic

It is necessary to insulate your house in order to maintain a nice, constant temperature in your home and also reduce the cost with energy. It may be quite expensive to install some good quality insulation, but the payback from investment will come in a short time.

Tools and Materials

  • Utility knife
  • Insulation
  • Duct tape
  • Polyethylene
  • Staples
  • Stapler

Moisture barrier

First of all measure the attic floor and calculate how much polyethylene you will need.

You will actually need double the amount.

Then staple the polyethylene on the ceiling below the attic floor. Overlap the edges of the sheets by 16 inches. If the house is finished, then you can cut the polyethylene in strips and fit it between the unfinished floor spaces.

Selecting insulation

You can use any type of insulation, from roller fiberglass and rigid insulation to loose cellulose insulation. Fiberglass insulation is very easy to install and it fits perfect on your attic floor.

Quantity

Measure the space between the floor joist and the calculate the right square footage. This will help you buy the right amount of insulator.

Installation

Roll out the fiberglass and cut it in strips that have the 1-2 inches over the size of the space between the joists. Just place the strips. Finish the entire floor.

Polyethylene

You can add another layer of polyethylene for better protection. This is optional. Overlap the sheets like before.
