How to waterproof a basement floor

Waterproofing is one of the most important tasks a home owner has to do. It’s essential to do this because you will prevent mold and mildew growth and also water damage to your home.

Before you start applying the waterproofing material, you will need to make sure that the floor has no cracks or holes.

For thin cracks you can use caulk to fill them or you can use a patching compound for larger ones.

First of all clean the crack, by removing any traces of dirt or dust. Only after you should apply the caulk or patching compound.Use a trowel to apply it to the surface.

After the cracks has been repaired and the material has dried, you can go buy the primer and start applying it to the surface. You will also need to get a paintbrush or a paint roller. Make sure the primer is designed for basement floors.

Coating the floor

Use the paint roller or the paintbrush to apply the paint to the floor. Make sure you cover every inch of the floor. Let the first coat dry for at least 24 hours.

A second coat is always necessary so you can start applying the next one immediately after the first one has dried. If you want to make the surface even more effective against water infiltration, then you can apply a third layer.
