Hydraulic cement and damp basements

Damp basement aren’t only unpleasant, but they can represent a source of disease for your beloved ones. This is the result of mold and mildew which grow in damp, moist areas. Water leaks are very common in homes, especially in basements.

Leaks are also the result of plumbing problems, or of water infiltration through cracks. To cover the cracks, you will need to use a hydraulic cement. Here’s how you can do it.

Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:

  • Hydraulic cement
  • Hammer & Chisel
  • Brush
  • Water
  • Pair of gloves
  • Dust mask

Before you start mixing the cement with water, you will need to pay attention to the instructions provided by the manufacturer. Hydraulic cement dries very quickly and this is why you need to act quickly. Also, hydraulic cement dust can cause irritations, so make sure you wear safety goggles and a dust mask. The basement must be well ventilated.

After taking this safety measures, you need to start preparing the surface. First of all remove any loose mortar, mold,  grease and other debris. Use detergent to clean mold and remove grease. Use a wire brush to scrub the surface clean.

Preparing the cracks

Before applying the cement, you will need to open the crack a little more. Use a chisel or a hammer to remove the loose mortar. By widening the crack, you will help the cement adhere better. Also use a wire brush.

Now it’s time to apply the cement. Moisten the crack with a little clear water. Then apply the cement paste in the crack. Make sure to fill it whole. Let the cement dry for 24 hours and then you can smooth the surface and paint it.
