Waterproofing paint for basements

Paint waterproofing is an easy job that can be done by every homeowner. It’s one of those things that needs to be done for protecting your home. Waterproofing your basement is very important as this way you avoid mold and mildew growth and also water damage to your home.

Here’s how you can waterproof your basement with paint.

Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:

  • Cleaning cloth
  • Waterproof paint
  • Bleach
  • Sandblaster or Wire brush
  • Quick drying cement

Buying the paint

Go to your local home improvement store and ask for guidance for buying a waterproof paint for your basement. It can be quite difficult to choose a paint on your own, as there are many types on the market.

Waterproofing paint will not stop serious wall leaks or protect your basement from floods. What it does is stop moisture infiltration and mold and mildew growth. It’s meant to protect basements that do not have serious flooding problems.

Preparing the area

Before applying the paint, you will need to prepare the area. First of all you will need to clean the basement. Remove any dirt, mold and mildew from the floor or walls using cleaning agents. Use diluted bleach to remove mold and mildew, but make sure the area is well ventilated. If there is any paint left on the walls or floor, make sure you remove it using a sandblaster. Also make sure you repair any crack and fill every hole before starting to apply the paint.

Now you can start applying the paint. You will need to apply at least 2 coats of waterproofing paint to make sure that it’s resistant.
