How can you remove bad smells from air-conditioners
When having to deal with the bad smells in your home, the best chance to remove them is to deal with their source. Bad odors usually come from mold and mildew that can accumulate on the refrigerator coils and also on clogged drain. Also you should check the unit and see if there are any dead animals
Tools You’ll Need
- Garden hose
- Latex gloves
- Bleach or vinegar
- New filters
- Liquid soap
- Foaming coil cleaner
- Three-way clean-out valve
Check your air-conditioning unit
This usually depends on the type of your air-conditioning unit.
Cleaning the air-conditioning unit
Always wear latex gloves when you clean the air-conditioner. Decaying vegetation and dead animals may carry dangerous bacteria. Use some foam coil cleaner and spray it on the air conditioner coils and allow it to work for about 10 minutes. This will remove any dirt, oil or grime. Use water to rinse the spot.
Flush your drain line
To do this, find the drain line. Use bleach and hot water to wash the line. Also you may use distilled white vinegar. This will kill any fungi, mold and mildew. Let the line to dry. Now it’s the time to install a three-way clean-out valve that will allow you to clean the line without removing it. Also make sure that the pan and hole are clean.
Draining pan
To clean the draining pan, use some hot, soapy water. You can also use white distilled vinegar or bleach to kill fungi and mold. Let it dry.
Replacing the filters
Find the air filters and inspect them. If they are full of dust replace them, or wash them if they are reusable. Reusable filters can be cleaned by washing them with very diluted bleach or with soapy water.
Now inspect the quality of the air. If the odors persist, maybe there is a problem in the ducts.
