Adding insulation to your attic
Unnecessary energy expenses are inevitable in a house that isn’t insulated. The heat transfer between the inside and outside of your home will be greater than in the case of an insulated house. The temperature will not be as high and heat sources will have to work harder to maintain the same temperature.
Benefits of blanket insulation
There are many types of insulation and one of them is cellulose insulation. This type of insulation is particularly great if you need to cover tight and more difficult to apply spaces. Blanket insulation is great for those who never used insulation before. It comes in rolls and it can be applied with great ease. It is not as messy as loose insulation. The main drawback is that it can’t cover all attic parts.
Choosing the right insulation
For an uninsulated attic, you will need to apply a layer of at least 6 inches of insulation. You can also apply a 4 inch blanket insulation. When you buy insulation is doesn’t really matters the thickness but the R-value. The R-value determines the heat transfer of the insulation material. The higher the better.
Although blanket insulation will cost you more, it has a higher R-value and will save you more money.
Safety
If you are using fiberglass blanket insulation, then you should take some safety measures. Always wear goggles, a mask, long sleeves and gloves. The loose fibers can cause breathing problems and rashes on your skin.
Installing blanket insulation
First of all you will need to buy the right amount of insulation. Measure the area of your attic and calculate the square footage. Then start removing any objects from the attic and clean it up. Vacuum the dust and the debris. You will need a staple gun, a pair of scissors and safety gear.
Set the roll between the joists and then start unrolling it. Be careful to fix it properly with the staple gun. The wiring needs to be above the insulation to keep it from overheating. If you need to use more than one roll for one side, make sure the two rolls butt up against one another.
