Insulating attic flooring
When you decide that you need to insulate your attic, you should insulate the roof and the floor to get the best efficiency. The insulation will keep your house warmer and will help you save money on energy.
Tools and Materials Needed:
- Insulation material or kit
- Face mask
- Protective gloves
- Tape measure
- Notepad and pen
First of all you need to know the square footage of the area that needs insulated.
Now is the time to see if there are any problems with your attic, like cracks, mildew, anything that could affect the insulation process.
Before starting the insulation, remove any object from the attic and clean the space for any debris and dust. Repair any cracks and gaps using caulk.
Also be sure that you are protected. Buy a mask, some gloves and goggles.
You will need to measure the space between the joists and then cut the strips of insulation at the right size. Place the strips with the moisture barrier facing down. For trimming the strips, you can use a pair of scissors or a putty knife.
Be careful with the electrical wiring. Leave a gap between them and the insulation of at least 2 inches.
You can also install loose insulation. Use the blower to make a nice thick layer. Spread the materials so that it is even and also make sure you place the insulation under cables and pipes.
If you have installed loose insulation, make sure that you do not spread it through out your house. Put it all in bags and use blanket insulation on the access hatch.
