Install a ceiling access panel
Every house needs a ceiling access panel. This way to ensure that you have an access point to the attic for renewing the insulation or for depositing some old stuff.Things You Will Need:
- 1-2×4 or 2×6 board
- 1-Piece of 1/2 in or 3/4 plywood
- Drill
- Screws
- Finishing nails
- Saw
- Safety goggles
- Ladder
- Casing
Step1.
This is a tricky part. First of all you’ll have to think about the look of it. You can’t place the access panel in the middle of the room. It has to be placed somewhere where it’s less noticeable. Also, think about the utilities that you need to have access too. Place the panle near to them. Locate the ceiling joists. The panel needs to be placed between them.
Step2. Measure
Measure the distance between the ceiling joists and think of how big would you like the access panel to be. Draw some lines on the ceiling to aid you in the process of cutting. Write the measure down a piece of paper.
Step3. Cut
You can now begin to cut the hole into the ceiling. Use a special saw. Also use safety goggles.
Step4. Support
Cut the beam into two pieces of the correct size. Secure them opposite of each other and across the ceiling joists. Make sure these are sturdy since they will need to bear your weight.
Step5. Plywood
Cut a piece of plywood that you will use as a door. It will need to fit the ceiling hole fairly snug.
Step6. Paint
Now you need to paint the wood in any color you wish. To hide it, you can use the same color of the ceiling. You may also want to paint the casing so that it will dry before the installation.
Step7. Placing the plywood in the attic
Place the plywood door into the attic with the painted side facing downwards, and the panel to the side.
Step8. Casing
Install the casing around the access panel door and fix it with nails. Make sure it’s resistant.
Step9. Finish
Leave the paint dry for about 24 hours. Test the door.
