How to prevent mildew in house vents
The problem with vent mildew is that is can spread very fast through the ducts. To reduce and eliminate the mildew formation, you need to handle the source of the infestation. Mildew usually grows in dump and shady places.
Cleaning
Clean your vent system as often as you can. You can clean the vents by using a solution of chlorine bleach. Mix the bleach with some water and then spray it in the vents.
Lighting, leaks and ventilation
Check for moisture in the vents. If you find any, it means that there is a leak in your venting system. Or water line. Air conditioners may also be the cause. Repair the leaks and dry the affected areas. Use ventilation fans to dry and properly air the room and the vents.
Light is one of the worst enemies of mildew. Keep the lights on as much as possible.
Inspect the dryer and vents at least once a year. Check for lint build-ups.
Dry any wet cloths and shower curtains to prevent mildew formations.
Removing mildew odors and repainting
Walls that have been severely affected by the mildew should be cleaned and repainted. Always use anti-mildew agents for the paint. These mix with the paint and prevent mildew formations. Thoroughly clean the area before repainting.
To prevent odors, let the windows opened as much as possible and also dry all cloths before storing them. You can use an electric fan to air the rooms.
