Categories of backyard and garden fences
Backyard fences are generally used for marking the limit within a territory, keep children or pets inside and even serve as decorative objects. They come in a wide range of styles, so you don’t have to worry that you don’t have where to choose from. It all depends on the purpose it will serve.
Wood
Wooden fences have also various categories, depending on the type of the wood, but there are mainly 3 types: picket, privacy and ranch.
Picket
The most widespread from this category is the white picket fence. The wooden boards are arranged vertically, with a space of 1/2 inches between them. These pickets are connected with horizontal boards at the top and bottom. They have a height of about 3-5 feets and they’re used mainly as decorative fences.
Privacy
Fences used for privacy are as high as 8 feet tall and don’t contain gaps between the wooden boards which would provide visibility inside the property. They are ideal for those who want security and privacy, also because they are like a shield which protects your dwelling from winds.
Ranch
Ranch style fences don’t offer any protection and are mostly used for keeping in large livestock. They’re composed of vertical posts, which are connected by 2/3 wooden rails with equal spaces between them. These fences are mainly found at farms and besides practical purposes they are also decorative.
Chain link
Chain link fences are good because they are durable and secure( the level of security depends on its height). Their structure consists of metal posts which stick vertically from concrete foundations that support crisscross sections from a chain link. If you want to achieve a sense of privacy by installing a chaink link fence, you must know that their heights vary a lot and you can add vinyl slats vertically through the slats.
Wrought iron/Aluminum
If you want a fence exclusively used for decorative purposes, these fences deserve a look. They are durable and require a low maintenence. Wrought iron is a little bit expensive, but you can also use aluminum, which is a cheaper alternative. Their structure is similar to those of picket fences; the only difference is that the posts are installed in a concrete foundation.
Vinyl
Vinyl fences represent only the cheaper alternative of all the other fences. They can easily imitate metal fences and wood fences and they are advantages are represented by durability and a low-maintenance.
Garden fence types
Garden fences are a necessary purchase for garden owners because not only they represent a barrier for undesired animals or other beings which might alter your crops, but also they decorate your surroundings. Others are used even for blocking the wind.
There are several types of garden fences from which you can choose:
- Metal
Metal fences include the aluminum and wrought-iron ones. They are included in the decorative fences category and they’re available in a variety of models, from classic to modern. The most durable metal fences have also the role of preventing intruders( pets, as well as other people) from invading your garden.
There are available in a wide range of standard colors and they have numerous custom options to fit every taste. - Wood privacy
Wood privacy fences are mainly used for enclosing the surface of a yard and they often feature prefabricated panels which are put between the posts. For a higher privacy, some types come with closely positioned slats or solid panels.
Generally, they are found at a height of 6 feet, but shorter models are also available, so as to provide coordinated fencing to enclose a specific object. - Picket
Picket fences are a great choice for cottage gardens and they also provide protection from large animals. They include vinyl or wooden fences and these 2 often include an installation kit, so they’re quite easy to install.
Picket fences are usually white, but you can pain these fences the same color as your house, or any other color you desire.
The vinyl ones are popular because they don’t require any maintenance after installing them. - Wire mesh
If you live in a rural environment and the decorative matters of fences don’t concern you too much, galvanized wire mesh fencing is a suitable option.
There are various types of wire mesh fences, such as chicken wire, welded wire and chain link. These fences can be installed below the ground level for the purpose of keeping away small animals such as rabbits.
If you want to enhance the beauty of these fences though, you can put non-invasive flowering vines onto the wire structure. - Shrubs
Dense shrubs or species of dwarf trees are the organic option when it comes to garden fences. They add color and texture to your property and cost less than fences made of wood, metal or stone.
If you want a living fence to work as a natural deer barrier, barberry represents a good choice. And if you decide to go for this type of fence, don’t forget that shrubs require regular pruning. - Masonry
Masonry fencing is suitable for certain houses and landscapes. They allow a free-form design for your garden and are made of brick, stacked stone or concrete block.
Stacked stone fences complement a Tuscan or French garden; concrete block and brick fences can be more suitable for a vegetable/ornamental garden.
Another advantage of these fences is that they can be built in a weekend.
