Categories of wire fences and welded wire fences

If you own a land area, you would probably consider installing a fence. Nowadays, you can do this with a relative small sum of money, depending on the purpose of the fence. If you execute a wire fence with attention and patience, chances are that you’ll obtain a long-lasting fence which will protect your pets/animals or whatever you desire.

Tools needed:

  • wire
  • corner posts, brace posts, line posts
  • leather gloves
  • post hole digger
  • staples
  • wire stretcher
  • fencing pliers

Tips:

When you choose the type of fence you want, you must first thing about its purpose and about the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of wire fences.
You must think about the objects or beings it will contain or keep out, the sum of money you’re willing to spend and the period of time for which you install the fence.
For example, even if a wooven wire fence is more expensive than others, it won’t need such a high maintenance.

Fence posts

They also come in a variety of materials and sizes, but wooden and steel posts are the most common. When it comes to wooden posts, make sure you find a natural wood which is resistant to decay or one that will preserve the wood( a pressure treated one). Pressure treated wood increases the life span of a post up until 30 years.
Depending on the burying depth and strength that you need, the lengths and diameters of the posts vary widely.
Wooden posts are less expensive than steel ones, which have a length of 5 to 8 feet.
A smart idea for maximizing the strength of your fence would be to alternate wooden and steel posts, which will also lower the costs.

Wooven wire fences

These consist of both vertical and horizontal wires attached to one another in increments of either 6 or 12 inches. Wooven wire fences are usually 36 or 48 inches tall and represent a solid fence that can keep out undesired predators.
They require an initial higher investment, but the advantage is that they last longer than the other types.
If you worry that predators may invade your property, you can run a strand of barbed wire along the top and bottom of your wooven wire fence.

Barbed wire

Barbed wire is found in a wide range of patterns and styles. They consist of strand of wires twisted together in a cord with barbs that protrude at 4/5 inch intervals. The role of these barbs is to prevent undesired animals from entering your property.
You can construct such a fence by yourself: use 5 strands of barbed wire to staple them to the posts at regular intervals.

High-tensile wire

This kind of wire is the cheapest option. If you want to construct such a fence by yourself, use 8 strands of 12.5 gauge smooth wire- you will obtain a high-tensile, non-electric fence.
If you want the other option, an electric fence which will keep animals away, you have to know that a typical electrified, high-tensile fence has 5 strands of smooth wire, with only 3 of them energized.
For an electrified fence you will also have to purchase an energizer, to charge your fence periodically.

Welded wire fences

These type of fences consist of panels in a mesh configuration, designed to keep within them livestock; for example you can use hog panels to keep deers out of the orchard. They can also be ornated to contain pets or just to make your yard more beautiful. Here are the types of welded wire fences and a few characteristics:

  • Livestock fence panels

These fences are used by farm and livestock owners; the panels are made of steel or galvanized and the differences between them consist of the size of the mesh holes. Panels for horses have the most open grid and are made of square holes from top to bottom. Cattle panels are quite similar to horse panels; the only difference is that cattle panels have a smaller grid size. Hog panel grid work is oblong at the bottom; the horizontal wires become square at the top, because this is where the crosswires are further apart. For more exotic animals, like ostrich, or for a wildlife rehabilitation facility, custom fences can be installed.

  •  Decorative fence panels

These fences are mainly livestock fence panels, which can be painted with metal paint and introduced between any fence poles to obtain ornamental fencing. It now depends on your architectural style. If it’s modernistic, silver-toned architectural wire mesh welded fence panels could be appropriate. These are also suitable for property boundary delimitation or for the brave ones, you can use them inside your house, as a design accent. If you want decoration for your garden, you can either purchase double loop or roll top wire mesh panels or vertical wire panels. If you want a 2in1 product, a decorative and secure fence, you can have it. They are impossible to climb and prevent wildlife from invading your space.

  •  Portable fence panels

Portable fence panels are the ones used as cages for pets or dog kennels or the ones used at shows/concerts for assuring privacy. Their purpose is to easen the portability, being designed for a quick setup. Using panels that have the feature of a tilted, anti-climb top panels is appropriate for when you want to keep persons out of a private outdoor property. For a pet show or animal trial, there are source pet containment systems you can use, as they come with fitted plastic canvas weather.
