Painting tips for fences

A picket fence can help you a lot in becoming a true American. The downside of such a fence is that it needs to be repainted after every few years. It can take a lot of time and effort but you will find here some tips on how to make everything easier.

The cleaning

Before the new paint is put on the fence, you have to take the old one down. It’s easier to start with the bigger areas of peeling paint and because the mess will be all over the place, you can put something under the fence to help you in the end.

To protect the plants around the fence, cover them with plastic cloths. Then with a power washer clean the fence of the old paint until you get a smooth surface for painting.

The preservative

Before applying the new paint, the fence has to be protected with a coating of wood preservative that works to repel water. It’s better to do all this by hand using a paintbrush, because this way you can cover all the difficult areas. After all the fence has been covered, let it dry for a few days.

The primer

A single gallon of primer will be enough to cover once the entire picket fence. To save some time you can use a paint sprayer but for tricky areas it’s better to use a paintbrush. To protect the plants around, cover them with something.

The painting

You won’t get the desired result after the first coat of paint. After the second one things will look much better but before you apply this one, let the first coat to fully dry.

The new fencing

If you intend to install a new fence, it’s better to paint it before you put it into the ground. Using a paint spray you will finish much quicker and the coverage will be well done. This way will be nicer when erected and the danger of rotting will be minimum.
