Adding drywall to your garageIf you want to transform your garage in a living area, you will surely need some drywall. Drywall can turn any room in a comfortable part of the home. It is a fairly easy process and it can take you a weekend to finish it.
Tools and Materials:
- Utility knife
- Tape measure
- Chalk line
- Drywall saw
- Drywall screws
- Power drill
- Drywall knifes
- Drywall compound
- Drywall tape
- Drywall trough
Clearing the work area
Clear the garage of any automobiles. Also remove boxes, tools, shelves, bikes or any other objects like gardening tools etc.. Now gather all the tools that you will need for the drywall installation.
Measure the horizontal and vertical distance of the wall that you need to cover up. Also take into consideration any windows and doors. Be careful when you fix the frame on the walls and ceilings. Mark the spot where each piece of the frame is installed so that you know where to put the drywall screws.
Installing the full sheets
Start from one bottom corner of the wall. You should try and install as may full sheets as you can. This will make it easier for you because you will then need to cover up small spaces. Fix the sheets on the wall with drywall screws. As we said above, be careful to mark the spots of every piece of the frame. Start putting the screws in the center of the sheet and then continue on the sides.
Making cuts for fixtures
Be careful to mark the fixtures on the wall, like power outlets, light switches, the circuit panel, light fixtures, windows or just some small panels. Don’t start cutting sheets in advance. You should handle the fixtures only when you have reached them. Measure the place where the fixture will be and when you are sure, cut the place with a drywall knife.
When you have to cut drywall sheets to fit into small spaces, for example, you should measure the space and then use some chalk to mark it. Then use a special drywall knife,or just a utility knife. Run the knife through the sheet to make a clean cut.
Before you apply any coat of primer or paint, you should cover all the cracks and spaces between the sheets. This can be done with some special drywall compound and some drywall tape. Apply the drywall tape and then put a layer of compound over it. Then cover the tape with a second layer or compound. Also, you need to cover up the screw holes.
