Building a carportIf you want to build something to shelter your car, then carport are the best choice. They are cheaper than any garage and offer almost as much protection as they do.
Tools and Materials:
- Circular saw
- Sheet roofing
- Concrete mix
- Post stirrups
- Joist hangers
- Roofing screws and washers
- Carpenter’s square
- Post level
- Post hole digger
- Paint brush
- String line
The first thing you need to do, when you decide to build a carport, is to consult the local authorities and see if you need any special permit for the structure.
Setting the posts
The holes for the posts need to be at least one foot wide and deep. Follow the instructions of the manufacturer. Pour the concrete into the holes and fix the stirrup brackets in the center of each of the concrete pads. The space between the posts and the ground needs to be for at least 3 inches. Let the concrete dry for about 2 days.
Cut 2 inch X 6 inch notches in each of the posts for the bearers. Place the posts in the brackets, and check to make sure that they are perfectly vertical. If the posts are wobbly, use stones or wooden braces to support then while you work. Drill holes for the carriage bolts and then secure every post to the brackets.
Planning the roof
Use a tape measure and measure the height of the posts. Decide at what height you want the roof to be installed. Cut the excess of each post. Add a slight angle to the roof to avoid the water from gathering. Make the slope away from your home.
Cut a bearing beam that fits the length of your car port and then set it into the rebates you’ve cut. Bolt the beam to the rebates with galvanized 4 1/2 inch coach bolts.
If you want to attach the carport to your house, then you should cut another bearing beam and set it parallel to the other. If you have wooden walls use coach screws. If the walls are from masonry, then use dynabolts.
If you want to install some rafters, do this by attaching them with galvanized nails. They should be fixed to the two bearing beams you’ve installed. They should have a three feet space between them.
Attaching the roof
First of all you will need to make sure that the roof is a little inches bigger than the carport, so that the rain doesn’t drip on your car. You will want to fix the roof over the bearers. Also, make sure that the roof screws are fitted with rubber washes.
