Insulate your garage

If you decide to have a heated garage, you should think first of insulating it. If you don’t do this, the heat will escape and all your money will fly out the window.

Tools and Materials Needed

Paper backed fiberglass insulation
Staple gun
Utility knife
Straight edge
Plastic sheeting
Caulk and caulk gun

Adding insulation between studs

For the insulation you can use paper backed fiberglass.

You will need to cut strips of fiberglass to the right size. You will need just a utility knife and a straight edge. For the best insulation, push the fiberglass into every opening. The paper side needs to be facing downwards.

Always use gloves and long sleeves when working with fiberglass, because it cause cause skin irritation. You can use a staple gun and fix the fiberglass to the studs.

Attaching plastic sheeting

After you have packed the insulation in the walls, it’s time to wrap it with tight plastic sheets. Start from one corner and use the staple gun to fix it to the studs. The strips of plastic need to overlap to ensure full protection.

Trimming the plastic

Now it’s time to cut the plastic that covered the windows and the wall fixtures: outlets, panels etc. Use a utility knife to do this. Cut the plastic with care because it may tear apart. Use the staple gun to attach the plastic sheet’s edges to the studs. This will ensure a tight seal.

In case of drywall

If you have drywall on the walls, then the steps above won’t apply to you. You will need to use some blown insulation. You can find this at any local hardware store. You can also rent an insulation blower. You will need to make a few holes in the drywall and then blow the insulation in the spaces between the studs.

Sealing windows and doors

To seal the windows and the doors, you will need to use some heavy-duty caulk and to fortify the seals around the windows and the garage door.

To seal the door, place under it some rubber weather stripping. This will keep air from coming in. If your garage door isn’t insulated, you can buy an insulation kit from your local hardware store.
