How to paint kitchen cabinets like a pro
Kitchen cabinets are one of the focal points of your kitchen. That’s why they should represent a priority for decorations. If you want to update your cabinets but do not afford buying new ones, you can paint them.
Hardware removal
First of all you will need to remove all the hinges and take the cabinet doors down. Remove all knobs and handles. After you paint the cabinets you may want to replace them.
Preparing cabinet surface
There are two ways of removing the old finish: sand the surface of strip it. For clear-coat finishes, use a chemical to strip it down. Use a medium-grit sandpaper to remove the finish of the old paint. Smooth the surface with a finer sandpaper. It’s very important to prepare the wood because the new paint will adhere better to the surface.
Type of paint
If you want a harder and more durable paint coat, you should choose an oil-based paint. Latex paint are easier to clean up and they will dry faster. A gloss finish is most recommended as it’s easier to clean and offers better protection.
Tools
Having high quality tools also ensures a good finish. Use a high-quality brush or a pneumatic spray instead or a roller.
Apply two or three thin coats if you are using a brush. This will produce a smoother finish. You can sand the surface lightly after you apply each coat. Make sure that the surface is dust free and the room is ventilated.
You can also use a paint spray. If you do not have one, rent it from your local home improvement store. Avoid accumulation of paint by spraying in rapid motions.
Finishing touches
Let the cabinets dry over night. Make sure that you paint every inch of the cabinets. Use masking tape to cover areas that you do not want to paint.
