Installing staircase risers
Support and safety are the most important things when building a staircase. There is an obvious order of installation that needs to be respected. The risers are the components that will need to be installed over the stringers.
- All risers need to have the same width and height. You can cut your own risers or buy pre-cut ones. Sand the edges of all risers to remove any variance in the measurements.
- Next you will need to put some wood glue along the vertical edge at the bottom of each stringer. This will provide extra support and remove the squeaks. Use a level to position the risers on each stringer and ensure that they are leveled. Press the risers to the glue and then recheck the edges.
- Use small nails to secure the risers. You need to nail the top and the bottom of the risers at least.
- Repeat the steps for each riser. One trick to ensure work support, is to alternate installing risers with tread to create a platform to work from.
