Choosing the wood
Some of the most popular types of wood used for newel posts are pine, hemlock and poplar. Also, you can use maple and oak. You should use the same wood that the stairs are made.
Building the base
The base needs to be made from two different parts, so that you can cover the completed newel post. You should make it for about 2-3 inches high.
Assembling the panels
Measure the size needed for the four walls of the post. If you’re considering making a deisgn, make it before you assemble it. Be careful on calculating the righ angle for joining the edges. Glue the pieces together and let them properly dry over night.
Finishing the top
Use rotary tools to cut the edges round or you can go shopping. You should find newel post tops in furniture recycling stores. Just glue the top on the finished body.
Use sand paper to sand the surface of the post. Hand sand it if it has a specific design. Also use a sealant to treat the wood.
When you’re done with the post, just fix the base of it with screws. It needs to be well fixed. Insert the newel post over the fitting already in place. Secure the rail structure to the post.
