Cutting steel roofing

In order to properly cover all of your roof, you will need to cut the steel panels to get them to the right dimensions. You will need some safety equipment, as steel can be very hard to cut and can cause injuries.

Here are the tools that you’ll need:

  • eye protection
  • ear plugs
  • gloves
  • tape measure
  • straight edge
  • permanent marker
  • chalk
  • tin snips
  • metal shears
  • power nibbler
  • workbench

Measurements

Place the steel panel on your working bench and start measuring the needed size.

Mark the spots where you will need to cut and use a straight edge to draw a line between these spots.

Cutting

Put on your gloves, and safety goggles. These will protect you against sharp edges and flying debris. Begin cutting down the straight line, holding the cutter tightly with both hands if possible. Be sure that you are cutting with the lower jaw of the snips facing towards the material that you won’t be installing on the roof. This way the panels won’t bend and they won’t have sharp edges.

Alternative cutting tools

As an alternative, you can use a circular abrasive saw blade. Also be sure that you are wearing goggles, gloves, ear muffs. A lot of sparks will be flying and you do not want them to get into your eyes, and also the sound will be very powerful. Cut down the straight line. Do not rush the cut.

Cleaning

After the cut, a lot of steel debris will be left on the working bench. Make sure to remove them to avoid any cuts.
