Roof maintenance
The best way to prevent leaks and roof damage is to do some regular roof maintenance. A simple inspection can save you a lot of money and time. Inspecting your roof once a few months will assure that it stays in a great condition.
There are a few things that will help you maintain your roof in a good shape.
Trees
Trees can cause numerous problems to your house. Branches, leaves can clog the roof gutters, causing water to back-up into your attic, or living space. Also overhanging trees can damage the roof covering, allowing water to enter your home. Trees near your house need to be trimmed.
Streaks
Streaks are an indicator or a mold, algae or fungus problem. They grow thanks to the high humidity. If they are left untreated they can eat away the roof covering, causing deterioration and leading to roof leaks.
Trees can be a damaging factor. Their shade is helping the fungus grow. Trimming back the trees will reduce the shade and improve the air circulation. A great solution for mold and fungus problems are the zinc strips. These need to be installed along the ridge of the roof, and when the water flows down the roof, it will carry a protective agent.
If your roof is new, then the zinc strips will suffice. If the roof is older, then clean it from any vegetation and then install the strips.
Roof inspection
Look for missing shingles. A roof structure without its protective covering it’s very vulnerable to water damage. Also shingles that are loose will be easily blown by the wind. So inspect your roof, and once you have discovered a problem, take immediate action.
If you have asphalt shingles, then you can do the repairs by yourself. You will need to remove the good shingles above the damaged shingle and then replace it.
