Shingling a porch roof
If you have a porch, you will need eventually to re-shingle its roof because of damaged shingles or missing ones. If you want to do the job properly, you will need to make sure that the materials used are of good quality.
Materials
You will need four components for the shingling process: shingles, felt paper, flashing and drip edge.
Alignment
An important aspect is that the shingles need to hang at least 1/8 of an inch over the edge of the roof. This will keep rain from dripping onto the soffit. Also make sure that the tabs and cut-outs do not line up with each other. The flashings also need to be aligned correctly to ensure that the roof won’t be leaking.
Installation tips
It’s important that you buy the right shingles for your roof. The weather is an important factor and there are shingles specially designed for harsh climates. Shingles can be made from different materials, like wood, metal, rubber, slate and some composite materials. Each of them has advantages and disadvantages so choose the best one for your home.
