Plaster ceilings can easily crack and detach from the fixture on which it has been mounted. If you have one of these problems, you should know that you can repair them with drywall sheetings.

What You Will Need:

  • Sheetrock board of the correct thickness
  • Sheets to cover the floor and furniture
  • Hammer
  • Chisel
  • Tape measure
  • Putty knife
  • Drywall tape
  • Jointing compound
  • Drywall knives
  • Sanding blocks

Asses the damage

First of all you’ll need to asses the extend of the damage. If you want to repair the plaster the original way, then you need to call a professional.

Step2. How to protect the floor

Before starting to tear down the damaged plaster, cover the floor. When removing the plaster, the joists will be exposed.

Step3. Marking the work area

Carefully cut the damaged plaster so that you will form a rectangular shaped cut. Use a hammer and a chisel to cut the margins as straight as possible.

Step4. Cutting the sheetrock to size

Now, you need to cut the sheetrock so that it will fit the rectangular cut on the ceiling. Make it as tight as possible. Note the position of the joists and mark them on the back of the sheerock.

Step5. Securing the sheetrock

Put the sheetrock into the shape cut in the wall and then fix it with screws to the joists. You can also fix it by the lath.

Step6. Covering compound

Apply the compound on the margins of the sheetrock, right where it touches the plaster. Don’t worry if the sheetrock will shrink a little.

Step7. Blending the news surface

Apply a few layers on the entire sheet and on to the plaster as well. Then leave it to dry for a while.

Step8. Final check

Now you need to sand the compound with the help of some sanding blocks. Check for ridges and bubbles. You may need to apply another coat before the final sanding.

Step9. Finishing touches

If you don’t want the repair to be noticed, then treat the area with a light primer. Now paint it with the same color as the ceiling.
