Fiberglass shingles

Fiberglass shingles are very similar to asphalt shingles. Many times they also have asphalt in composition. These are usually much more durable.

They can last up to 25 years. Here are the tools and materials that will be needed:

Roof preparation

You will need to remove the old roof covering and also any left debris. You will need a clean surface to work on. Also inspect the roof structure and see if there are any structural problems. Also patch it if necessary.

Drip edges

You will need to secure the drip edges with nails. They are usually made from aluminum strips that need to overlap at the corners. You can trim the overhang material.

Water barrier and underlayment

You can start from the edge of the drip edge, and apply a layer of shielding. Many times, the underlayment comes with an adhesive layer that will help you install it faster. Overlap the underlayment strips a few inches for a better protection. Staple them in place. You can cut the excess material.

Ventilation

Ventilation is very important. The hot air from the attic needs to have a way to escape, otherwise it can help mildew and mold growth and also toxic fumes can accumulate. Cut holes in the sheathing at the top of the roof using a saw. Also cut the underlayment to reveal it.

Installation

Fiberglass shingles are exactly the same as asphalt shingles, only that they do not have the tabs. You also need to lay them starting from the drip edge and fix them with nails. Install one row at a time. You should use 3-4 nails per shingle. You will also have to stagger the shingles so that the gaps do not directly line p from shingle row to row.

Vents

Place the vent over the hole in the roof. Secure them with roofing nails. Now secure the shingles designed for the vent. Use roof tar for the corners.
