Installing and building a fireplace mantel is an easy process that can be done by anyone with some basic knowledge about carpentry and by someone with the right tools.
You will need to gather the following materials:
- Phillips screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Lumber nails
- Penny finish nails
- Mounting boards
Install the fireplace backboard. This will secure the mantel.
You will need to put together the top of the mantel and then attach the rest of the it. Attach the mantel legs with the finish nails. Now you will need to mark the position of the mantel on the wall. After you have assembled the mantel legs you can place the mantel in position around the fireplace.
Now you can install the mounting boards. Install the fireplace mantel after you have mounted the boards to the studs. Paint the fireplace mantel before you install it. It will be easier fr you. Secure the mantel over the boards.
The last task is install the scribe molding. These are used for covering the gaps that may appear between the legs and the facing of the mantel.
You can use varnish if you want to retain the natural look of the wood. Use only high quality varnish and paint.
