How to deal with air conditioner noise
Unlike other types of air conditioners, window air conditioners are great for small apartments and have very low initial costs. They can also be transported if you decide to move into another apartment. It may happen that after some time, the air conditioner starts doing noises.
- Rubber gloves
- Dusting cloth
- Window putty
- Insulation tape
- Duct tape
- Wooden shim
One of the most common causes for window air conditioner noises is a vibrating window glass. This happens of course because the unit vibrates. Push gently on the glass while the unit is on and see if the noise disappears. If it does, then use some putty on the window frame to solve the problem.
Sometimes, the source of the noise may be the window sash. Apply some pressure to it and if the noise stops, then use a wood shim to solve the problem.
If you see no results with the above possible causes, then maybe the front panel of the window is vibrating. Check the screws if they are loose. Tighten them using a screwdriver. Turn the unit on and see if it still makes noises.
After intense use, the fan blades can get damaged and start vibrating. This will cause a vibration of the entire unit and also it will make noises. Also it may happen that the blades touch the condenser fins. Remove the cover of the unit and inspect the problem. Straighten any bent fan blades and also condenser fins.
Condenser coil pigtail
Noise can come from the fan blades hitting the condenser coil pigtail. This is a metal piece that runs out from the condenser to the condenser coil. To see if this is the problem, wiggle the chassis. To solve it, use some foam placed between the pigtail and the fan housing.
Other possible reasons
Dirt and debris can also be a noise cause. They tend to get in the unit and get the fan blades stuck. This happens because the window air conditioner is very exposed to outside elements.
