Installing a trellis for climbing roses
Climbing roses are some of the most popular rose varieties in the world. Planting, caring and training for these roses isn’t quite a hard job. You will need to know a few basic things to make things right.
One important thing when deciding to plant climbing roses is choosing the right spot for them. They need to have something to climb on and also they need to enjoy at least 5 hours of sunlight per day.
The best thing that you can do to enjoy the most of the blooms is plant the roses near a fence. When they spread horizontally, climbing roses will produce more blooms.
Also consider the fact that the trellis that you may install for the roses needs to be very durable, as it has to bear the weight of the roses, high winds and also rain. Also, build the trellis from durable materials. Wood will decay in time, and metal will rust and may create an unpleasant look. Aluminum is a great choice. The trellis shouldn’t be very tall, as you will need to do some pruning in the future.
After you have gathered all the materials that you will need for the trellis, you can start building it. After this make sure you anchor it firmly.
Now it’s time for planting the rose. You will need to dig a hole twice as large as the spread of the roots. Place the plant 18 inches away from the trellis. Cover the roots with loose soil. The graft union needs to be above the soil. If you live in a cold climate, then you will need to cover the graft union with a layer of 2-6 inches of soil.
After planting the roses, make sure you water them. This will help the plant recover quicker. Surround the base of the plant with compost and a rich fertilizer. You can also add a layer of mulch.
After the rose starts growing, you will need to tie the structural canes to the trellis or whatever support structure you are using. Leave a little space between the canes. Make sure you balance them on the trellis.
You can start pruning the roses only after a couple of years after they have been planted.
