If you want to change the look of your kitchen, you don’t necessarily have to redesign all of it. Changing simple things like cabinet doors can make your kitchen look entirely different.
Making your own kitchen cabinet doors is fairly easy.
Tools and materials:
- Hardwood in your desired variety – ¾ inch and ¼ inch plywood with hardwood surface
- Table saw
- Mitre box, mitre square
- Router on a router table
- Electric drill/screwdriver
- Corner fasteners
- Wood glue
- Stain and polyurethane finish
It’s very important to choose the right type of wood for the doors, because each type offers different grain patterns and more or less durability. You will also need to look for finished wood or ask if those at the lumberyard can do it for you.
Next you will need to rip the 3/4 inch finished lumber to the desired width. The best width is of 2 inches because it leaves a noticeable frame and it adds style, all these without using too much wood.
Measure the existing doors and mark the measurements on the new wood door. Measure each door and write the measurements. Leave 1/2 an inch overlap on each side of the door. Also add one inch to the length of the stiles (vertical side of the door frame).
Making the cuts
Square the boards using a mitre square and then start cutting the boards on the same length as the old doors. First of all cut the stiles and then the rails (horizontal side of the door frame).
Make a coping cut on both ends of the rail by using a coping bit on the router and a coping sled. Next make a groove for the rails so that you can attach them to the stiles and so you can make a decorative cut along one of the edges of the stiles and rails.
Use a piece of plywood to cut the center panel for each of the cabinet doors. To find the right size for the interior panel measure in 3 1/4 inches from the exterior size.
Assembling the door
For this step you will need clamps and glues. Apply the glue to each of the rail ends and then insert into the stick bit groove. Use the clamps to hold them in place. Now insert the inner panel, but do not use any glue. Insert all the stiles and rails and glue them together.
The last thing you will need to do is finish the doors with a few layers of paint of stain.
