The most important thing to take care of is the sunlight. For a perfect aquaponic system you may want to have around 4 to 6 hours of direct sunlight in order to benefit from healthy plants. Keep in mind that fish do not need sunlight and they are actually happier without it.
Consider placing your system near a power source. As the case may be, you will have to pump water into your pond. Maybe you will have to use an air pump in order to prevent algae growth. You never know when a source power comes in handy.
Leaving some space in order to allow you to move freely around your aquaponic system, is a must due to the fact that you will have to plant and do maintenance around it. Your goal will be to reach the farthest corner of your beds, which means you will need space to stretch and make your way to it. It is a good technique to leave about 70-80 cm between beds. It will get you easy access.
Getting easily around your fish tank is also crucial. Usually, you will use a fish net to catch your fish or do maintenance. This means you need space to maneuver it and if you do not have it, you will make your work harder.
Keep an eye on the plants that are in the area you want to place your system. Some plants can cause fish deaths due to the increased toxicity level they release into the ground and in the water nearby. This is not common, but it might happen. Another inconvenient is the hard time you will have in doing maintenance. Increased amount of leaves or flowers will make everything tricky to be achieved.
Bottom line, for the perfect placing of an aquaponic system you need to consider the amount of sunlight you get and the vegetation around it. From this point allowing some space for moving around will be an easy job. It is always a good idea to have a power source around, too.
