Corrugated roofs are very popular among homeowners, mainly because they are very durable, but this doesn’t make them leak proof. It is common for corrugated roofs to leak, but the good news is that these leaks can be easily repaired if you have the right tools.
Some of the tools and materials that you will need are:
- Watertight Sealing Tape
- Lacquer Thinner
- Corrugated Sheet (if sheet replacement is needed)
Be careful how you position the ladder.
Finding roof leaks
It can be quite difficult to find roof leaks. Your roof’s ceiling is the first sign for a leakage. Trace the leak backwards, from the ceiling to the roof. Sometimes the leak is just above the affected ceiling area.
Leaks are very common near skylights, chimneys, shingles, low spots, wall step flashings. Check the gutters and see if they are damaged or clogged.
Repairing the leak
Clean the area with the problem using a rag. After this apply a lacquer thinner. Use special tape to seal the area. This sealing tape needs to be made from patching metal materials so that they stick to the roof and also protect the affected area against UV. You can purchase sealing tape from any home improvement center.
If the area is too large to patch it, then you should replace the whole damaged corrugated sheet. Pull off the nails on the damaged sheet and the sides of near sheets. You will see that these sheets overlap. Replace the sheet and make sure that you use only special nails suited for corrugated roofs. You should use around 20 nails per sheet.
The best way to repair roof leaks is to prevent them. Regularly inspect the roof even if you do not have any leaks problems. Check the roof especially after storms, heavy rain, heavy snow. Unclog the gutters to allow proper water flow. Also clean the roof.
If you just do some regular maintenance to your roof, then you will have no problems with leaks.
